In 2015, Triton College in River Grove, Illinois received a $25,000 Fluid Power Lab Grant from the NFPA Education and Technology Foundation. The school used the funds to purchase equipment and supplies for their new lab, which is being used in three classes with approximately 42 students altogether each semester. Here’s what two of the students have to say . . .

“The materials that we had in class to work with were a great help in expanding my knowledge and learning the material covered in our fluid power text book. I believe that the materials provided helped me by making it easier to understand the subject taught, especially when you learn it by listening or reading, then having the luxury to experiment with what you just learned was ideal. The materials provided helped me learn how they operate, which led to me being able to think outside the box and come up with projects I would’ve never thought I would be able to build. All in all, having materials was a great hands-on learning experience that I believe is great preparation for the real world.”

“I would like to share a few things that I’ve learned in my most recent fun fluid power class. One of the most important things I learned in the class is safety. Always being aware of those around you, as well as having the proper knowledge on how to use each and every tool or material used in the class. The main things I learned and enjoyed had to be figuring out pneumatic systems. I learned the importance of how pressurized air powered by a compressor can help construct many different systems using air cylinders. Using all these tools gave me practice from brainstorming ideas, constructing my prototype, to building the final functioning product.”
